From Darren, a Dive Fish Snow Travel Customer

It’s always been an ambition to do an overseas dive trip and enjoy the warm water, viz, colourful fish life with some wrecks thrown in. After talking to some friends who have done quite a few over the years we settled on the Solomons.

We started doing the Google / internet thing to organise it but that got too hard so we found ourselves talking to Dive Fish and Snow – a travel agency specialising in as the name would suggest – Dive, Fishing or Snow holidays. Turns out that one of their staff had just returned from the Solomons so was full of up to date info. (They don’t send punters anywhere they haven’t been).

Anyhow my wife and I together with our 15 yo eldest son armed ourselves with dive gear and a newly purchased underwater digital camera (I’ve never taken a photo underwater so don’t be too hard) and away we went.

Leaving Auckland for Brisbane then a flight to Honiara, then on to a commuter “milk run” flight landing at Sege then Munda and finally Gizo. We were met at the “terminal” by a staff member from Fatboys where we were staying.

Then into the “taxi” for the transfer.

Home for the next four nights

Accommodation

Complete with view

We visited Gizo the next day to check that our diving was all sorted. No worries, Dive Gizo were onto it and would pick us up from Fat Boys the next day.

In the afternoon one of the staff members took us to their village where we distributed a few goodies for the kids – pencils stickers etc.

Without exception, we found the locals to be very friendly and quick to smile.

Interesting home for a pig

We didn’t loose any weight despite the exercise – crayfish was often the cheapest meal on offer

Back at the resort and time for a snorkel around the restaurant / bar to have a play with the camera

Then on to the diving, 1st up – Joe’s wall

Third dive of the day was Secret Spot

Next day was the wreck of the Toa Maru a 400 ft Japanese Freighter. Lots of stuff to be seen ammo, a tank and my son found a jar of condoms.

A nice reefy drift dive finished the day and the next morning saw us dive the Gap and then get tranferred by boat to Lola Island where we stayed at Zipolo Habu resort for 3 nights.

Our accommodation here was very comfortable and should be very familiar to at least one person here!

Some of the locals were keen to watch the NRL final so what could we do but join in

The next day was diving with Dive Munda. Another wall dive in the morning

And another freighter, the Kasy Maru in the afternoon

Our last day was a blob out with the mandatory trip to Skull Island

Our son enjoyed a bit of fishing off the wharf – no luck but a few strikes and kept him busy while we enjoyed a coldie or two and chatting with a couple who had been cruising for the last 11 years.

Looking back, what do I remember? Heat, humidity, sure but the warm water, beautiful scenery both above and below as well as the local people with permanent smiles were the real stand outs

We had a great time and we’d certainly recommend Dive Fish and Snow, they know their stuff.
